Jonny Farrow, New York Society for Acoustic Ecology

“Over the River and Through the Woods…” A reminiscence? An interrogation of the holiday industry? A meditation on rivers and woods? To grandmother’s house we go? Re-making the holidays as you would like them to be as an adult? Perhaps none of these questions will be answered. But is it possible to smell gingerbread cookies while listening to a webcast? Hosted by New York Society for Acoustic Ecology co-chair Jonny Farrow, this show will focus on home recordings, holiday songs, and dusty memories from the shelves of holidays past. So, put on your pj’s, pour yourself a hot apple cider and curl up next to your laptop. More

About the Distribution Grant

Funding is available from free103point9 through a regrant from New York State Council on the Arts’ Electronic Media and Film Program. Grant awards will assist artists in making works available to public audiences and may include, but are not limited to: duplication of previews, screening, and exhibition copies of moving image and sound works; promotional materials including documentation and schematics of media-installation and new-media works. The rental or purchase of equipment for exhibition/distribution by individual artists is also eligible. Artists may request funding support up to a maximum amount of $10,000.

Live Art in the Parks performances are free-to-the-public in NYC parks with each performance date highlighting four artists – to create a total of 40 new performance works over the next year. The series works as a public laboratory for New York based performance artists to experiment and refine Live Art pieces for the masses. This public performance practice will provide the foundation for part two of 40º PHI: the 40º Phi Live Art Expedition, a traveling Live Art show that will visit towns across the country which are parallel to NYC on the 40º latitude line in 2009.

Noise! is a sound performance festival started in 2005. free103point9 curates for the third year. Each year the "Incubator" program at Ontological Theater hosts a Noise! festival, a three-night multi-arts event designed to promote interest in new forms of sound art. The festival will feature short compositions and performances by established and emerging artists. Each evening opens with a Radio 4x4 as the audience enters the theater. Radio 4x4 is a free103point9 collaborative radio transmission performance. Four simultaneous audio performances are separately sent through FM transmitters to radios positioned throughout a performance space. Each radio receives only one of the signals, so that the audience becomes an active collaborator in the performance, "mixing" the audio feeds by moving about the space among the four signals.

Performers to be announced.

Artists who would like to be considered for inclusion in 2009 should send details to Tom Roe at tr at free103point9.org. Please include “Noise! 2009” in your email subject. More

Tom Roe

Tom Roe's fifth annual remix of the Orson Welles' radio theater classic "The War of the Worlds." Roe takes the original and layers on broadcasts of the world's current wars, and the disinformation accompanying current wars. This show comments on media manipulation in a similar manner to the Welles' broadcast, refiguring the hysteria for a media-soaked world. This year marks the 71st anniversary of the original broadcast. More
